CAT odd sentence out practice, from real essays

Odd sentence out is the para jumble's twin: five numbered sentences, four of which form a paragraph, and one intruder. You type the intruder's number. It is TITA - no options, no negative marking - and it rewards exactly the skill jumbles do: seeing which sentences hold hands. Our items take a real four-sentence paragraph from an Aeon essay and add one sentence from elsewhere in the same essay, so the intruder is on-topic and cannot be spotted by vocabulary alone.

The method: pair up, then look for the orphan

Do not hunt for the odd sentence first. Instead, find two sentences that clearly belong together - a claim and its But, a noun and the It that refers to it - and build outward. When four sentences chain, the fifth is the intruder, however relevant it sounds. The classic trap is a sentence on the same subject at a different altitude: a general statement dropped into a specific story, or a conclusion from a part of the essay the paragraph never reaches.

Try one

Five sentences are given below. Four of them form a coherent paragraph; one does not belong. Type the number of the odd sentence.

  • 1. It seemed, in a word, disgusting.
  • 2. Psychologically, disgust creates the impression of contamination, and a corresponding desire to cleanse or purify.
  • 3. The idea of growing muscle tissue in labs for human consumption, independently of an animal body, seemed unnatural and repellent.
  • 4. Is it any kind of reason at all?
  • 5. But faced with more humane, sustainable options, is disgust a good enough reason to reject them?

Answer: 2

Sentence 2 - "Psychologically, disgust creates the impression of contamination, and a corresponding desire to cleanse or purify." - is a general claim about the psychology of disgust from a different part of the same essay. The other four move together: a thing seemed repellent, it seemed disgusting, but is disgust a reason, is it any reason at all.
